Welcome

But dreams come through stone walls, light up dark rooms, or darken light ones, and their persons make their exits and their entrances as they please, and laugh at locksmiths.’ — Carmilla (Sheridan LeFanu, 1871)

About Me

My name is Carmilla Dawn. I write poetry and short stories. My writing explores the topics of sexuality, relationships, trauma, violence, horror and the occult.

Speculative fiction and confessional poetry are my “uncomfortable” comfort zones. I love the dark and she loves me.

I delight in the strange, the fantastical, and the horrifying. Some of my favorite authors and poets include Clive Barker, Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, C. S. Friedman, Octavia E. Butler, Anne Sexton, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Bukowski, and Sylvia Plath.

I reside in an unassuming town in the United States Midwest. On summer evenings, I listen to a chorus of crickets sing. In the autumn, gusts of wind send fallen leaves twirling down empty sidewalks. Winter is cold and lonely if you forget that spring will one day return.

When not battling chronic illness, I like to sleep under the stars with my husband. I binge-watch movies and YouTube when out of commission. In between writing projects, I love to escape into the pages of a book or roll the dice playing a solo RPG.

I’m a bit of a music fanatic. My favorite bands are Queens of the Stone Age, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool, Alice In Chains, The Afghan Whigs, The Doors, Depeche Mode, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, The Cure, and Joy Division. My tastes are eclectic. I enjoy a variety of other artists depending on my mood.

I study the Tarot. I attempt and fail at practicing meditation. I reread The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings every fall. I rewatch the movies at Christmas. I am fascinated by ancient history and the paranormal. My favorite things are those things that go bump in the night and blaze across the midnight sky.
